Hymn

JESU, the Father's only Son, whose death for all redemption won, before the worlds, of God most high, begotten all ineffably.

The Father's Light and Splendor Thou their endless Hope to Thee that bow: accept the prayers and praise today that through the world Thy servants pay.

Salvation's author, call to mind how, taking the form of humankind, born of a Virgin undefiled, Thou in man's flesh becamest a Child.

Thus testifies the present day Through every year in long array, that Thou, salvation's source alone proceedest from the Father's Throne.

Whence sky, and stars, and sea's abyss, and earth, and all that therein is, shall still, with laud and carol meet, the Author of thine Advent greet.

And we who, by Thy precious Blood from sin redeemed, are marked for God, on this, the day that saw Thy Birth, sing the new song of ransomed earth.

Glory to you O Lord, Who wast born of the Virgin; whom with the Father we adore, and Holy Ghost forevermore. Amen.


Nocturn I

Homilia sancti Bedae Venerabilis Presbyteri - Pastores quidem illi felici gaudio festinarunt videre quod audierant: et quia ardenti amore quaesierunt, continuo Salvatorem quem quaesierunt, invenire meruerunt. Reading 1: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke – In those times: the shepherds said one to another: Let us go over to Bethlehem, and let us see this word that is come to pass, which the Lord hath shewed to us. And they came with haste.  Etc

Homily of St Bede the Venerable, priest - The shepherds hastened with happy joy The  shepherds  hastened  with happy  joy to see what they  had  heard  about,  and  because they sought [it] with a burning love, they  were  worthy  to find  immediately the Savior whom  they  sought.  By  their  words as well as their deeds, they showed the shepherds  of spiritual flocks and, moreover, all of  the  faithful,  with  what diligence  of mind they too ought to be seeking Christ.  'Let us go over,' they said, 'to Bethlehem and see this Word which has come to be'. Let us also, therefore, dearly beloved brothers, go over in thought to Bethlehem, the city of David, and let us also recall [it] with love; let us  celebrate [Christ's]  incarnation with fitting honors. Having  cast  aside fleshly concupiscence, let us go over with the whole desire of our  mind to  the heavenly Bethlehem, that is, the house of  living bread,  not made  by  hands but  eternal in heaven, and let us lovingly recall that the word which  was  made  flesh. []   Let us follow him to that place with the whole urgency of our virtues, and with  solicitous  reproof of heart and body let us take care that we may deserve to see reigning in his Father's chair the  one they saw crying in a manger.

Lectio 2: Et venerunt festinantes, et invenerunt Mariam et Ioseph, et Infantern positum in praesepio. Venerunt pastores festinantes, et invenerunt Deum hominem natum, simul et eiusdem nativitatis ministros. Festinemus et
nos, fratres mei, non passibus pedum, sed bonorum profectibus operum videre eandem glorificatam humanitatem cum eiusdem ministris digna servitutis suae mercede remuneratis: festinemus videre ilium in divina Patris ac sua maiestate fulgentem. Festinemus, inquam; nam non est tanta beatitudo cum desidia ac torpore quaerenda, sed alacriter sunt Christi sequenda vestigia. Nam ipse cursum nostrum data manu iuvare desiderat, delectaturque audire a nobis: Trahe nos post te, curremus in odorem unguentorum tuorum. Citius ergo virtutum gressibus sequamur, ut mereamur consequi. Reading 2: And they came hurrying and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in a manger. The shepherds came hurrying and found God born as a human being, and at the  same  time they found those who were ministering to his nativity. We also should hurry, my brothers, not by the steps of our feet, but by progress in good works, to see this same glorified humanity with these same ministers who were rewarded for their service by a worthy prize. Let us hurry to see him shining in divine majesty, which is the Father's and his own. Let us hurry, I say, for such blessedness is not to be sought with idleness and sluggishness, but Christ's footsteps must be followed briskly. He also  desires  to  help  our  progress by giving us his  hand,  and  he  is delighted  to hear from us, ' Draw us; we will run after you in the odor of your ointments'  Let us follow more quickly with the steps of virtues so that  we may be worthy to overtake  [him].  Let no one be slow to be turned to the Lord; let no one delay from day to day. [Let us] entreat him through all and before all that he may direct our steps according to his word, and that no injustice may have dominion over us.

Lectio 3: Videntes autem cognoverunt de verbo, quod dictum erat illis de puero hoc.  Et nos, fratres dilectissimi, quae dicta sunt nobis de Salvatore nostro Deo vero et homine, interim pia fide percipere, et plena dilectione festinemus amplecti, ut haec in futuro perfecta cognitionis visu comprehendere valeamus. Haec etenim sola ac vera est beatorum non solum hominum, sed et  angelorum vita, faciem perpetuo sui cernere creatoris, quam desiderabat ardenter Psalmista, qui dicebat: Sitivit anima mea ad Deum vivum, quando veniam et apparebo ante faciem Dei? Cuius solius visione non autem ulla terrenarum rerum affluentia desiderium suum satiari posse signavit, cum ait: Satiabor dum manifestabitur gloria tua. Verum quia non otiosi ac desides, sed qui virtutum operibus insudant, divina contemplatione sunt digni, sollicite praemisit: Ego autem cum iustitia apparebo in conspectu tuo.

Reading 3: Once they saw they acknowledged the word that had been said to them about this child. And let us in the meantime hurry, dearly beloved brothers, to perceive with pious faith and to embrace with full love those things which have been said to us about our Savior, [who is] true God and true human being, so that we may be capable of comprehending these things in the future vision which is perfect recognition. For indeed this is the only true life of the blessed, not only of human beings, but of angels as well, to continually behold the face of their Creator, which the psalmist ardently desired [to behold], who said, My soul has thirsted for the living God; when shall I come and appear before the face of God?

Unto us is born, this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, Which is Christ the Lord.

Capit: Parvulus enim natus est nobis, et filius datus est nobis, et factus est principatus super humerum ejus: et vocabitur nomen ejus, Admirabilis, Consiliarius, Deus, Fortis, Pater futuri sæculi, Princeps pacis.
Chapter: For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace.
